Precision Layouts for Automated Warehouse Operations

Internal plant stake out were conducted across three construction sites in Northern Italy, focusing on the precise positioning of critical elements for automated warehouse operations. This project involved geo-referencing the locations of robot charging stations, individual operator protection elements, QR-code shelving positions, storage systems, and automated picking zones.

The primary objective was to establish millimeter-precise spatial references to facilitate the efficient management of robotic systems within the warehouse environments. This accuracy is crucial for seamless robot navigation, picking, and overall warehouse automation.

Need

Large-scale warehouse automation relies on accurate spatial data. Imprecise positioning of key elements can lead to significant operational inefficiencies, collisions, and system downtime. The challenge was to provide highly accurate topographical data across three distinct sites to ensure seamless integration of the robotic systems.

Solution

Our team utilized advanced surveying techniques and equipment to achieve the required millimeter precision. This included:

  • Precise Geo-referencing: Establishing a robust coordinate system within each warehouse to accurately locate all relevant elements.
  • Detailed Topographical Surveys: Conducting comprehensive surveys to capture the precise positions of robot charging stations, safety barriers, shelving, and other critical infrastructure.
  • Data Processing and Delivery: Processing the collected data to create detailed layout plans and spatial data sets that could be directly integrated into the warehouse management system.

Equipment Used

  • Leica Geosystems TS60 Motorized Total Station (0.5” accuracy)

The Leica TS60, with its high precision and motorized capabilities, was instrumental in achieving the required accuracy for this project. Its robotic functionality allowed for efficient one-person operation and precise targeting, minimizing errors and maximizing productivity.

Results

The project successfully delivered highly accurate topographical data for all three warehouse locations. This data enabled the seamless integration of the robotic systems and ensured efficient and reliable warehouse operations. The millimeter precision achieved contributed to:

  • Reduced risk of collisions and operational disruptions.
