Thermal Monitoring: Drones for Environmental and Industrial Safety

Through the creation of georeferenced thermal orthomosaics, we identify thermal anomalies and hotspots in landfills.

31 March 2026

Monitoring surface temperatures in complex sites, such as landfills and storage facilities, is a fundamental asset for environmental risk prevention. By utilizing calibrated radiometric thermal cameras mounted on drones, we are able to map large areas in reduced timeframes, overcoming the limitations of point-based ground inspections.

It is not just about capturing images, but about coordinating a workflow driven by our Digital Brain, which allows for the acquisition of thousands of thermal data points and their transformation into queryable, georeferenced digital models.

Strategic applications of aerial thermal monitoring:
  • Active Landfills: Early detection of spontaneous combustion phenomena and identification of "hotspots" within the waste body to prevent underground fires.
  • Composting Sites: Verification of thermal uniformity in biological processes and anaerobic digestion to optimize plant yield.
  • Industrial Plant Inspection: Detection of heat leaks, anomalies in critical assets, and zones of accelerated biological activity.

The effectiveness of the survey lies in the integration of aerial data with ground calibration measurements. We utilize thermocouples positioned at strategic control points to validate the radiometric sensor readings, ensuring certified technical data ready to be integrated into GIS and Digital Twin systems for proactive site management.

For our client IREN, we transformed the photogrammetric survey into an environmental intelligence tool, where every anomaly is located with millimetric precision, allowing for targeted and timely interventions.

Technical Details of the Activity:
  • Location: Cerro Tanaro (Asti, Italy)
  • Equipment used: The work was executed using a drone equipped with a calibrated radiometric thermal camera and high-resolution RGB sensors, supported by precision thermocouples for ground calibration.
  • Data quality verification: The validation process involves cross-referencing aerial radiometric data with point readings on the ground (ground truth), ensuring the full reliability of the final thermal orthomosaic in terms of resolution and thermal accuracy.
