SURVEYING AND MAPPING

Geomatics glossary

We are extremely attentive to the value of our work, ensuring that it is impartial and confidential.

BIM

BIM or Building Information Modelling is a process for creating and managing information on a construction project across the project lifecycle.

Bathymetry

Bathymetry is a digital image of the undersea land surface and water depth. Bathymetry is the underwater equivalent of land topography.

Boundary survey

Survey made to establish or to reestablish a boundary line on the ground, or to obtain data for constructing a map or plat showing a boundary line.

Cadastral survey

Survey relating to land boundaries, made to create units suitable for title transfer or to define the limitations of title. Derived from "cadastre" meaning a register of land quantities, values, and ownership used levying taxes.

GNSS receiver

There are two parts to most GNSS receivers, the antenna and the processing unit or receiver.

Geomatic

Geomatics professional is involved in mapping both the built and natural environment to provide accurate spatial data which facilitates planning.

Laser Scanning

Laser Scanning is the process of shining a structured laser line over the surface of an object in order to collect 3-dimensional data. The surface data is captured by a camera sensor mounted in the laser scanner which records accurate dense 3D points in space.

Mesh

A service mesh is an emerging architecture for dynamically linking to one another the chunks of server-side applications.

Orthophotograph

Photograph having the properties of an orthographic projection. It is derived from a conventional perspective photograph by simple or differential rectification so that image displacements caused by camera tilt and terrain relief are removed.

Point cloud

Point Cloud data, from multiple scanners, can be joined together to see all around an object or when scanning larger objects.

Reverse engineering

3D scanning for reverse engineering can do in hours what traditional methods can take weeks to accomplish. You first have to capture all 3D scans of the entire part with a 3D scanner, then clean up the scan data before you start the process of creating the model.

Theodolite

Precision surveying instrument for measuring horizontal and vertical angles.

Topography

Configuration (relief) of the land surface; the graphic delineation or portrayal of that configuration in map form, as by contour lines.

Total Station

Total Stations can be remotely controlled and are mounted on Surveying Tripods. A Total Station uses a Surveying Prisms as a measurement target

Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid

Military grid system based on the transverse Mercator projection, applied to maps of the Earth's surface extending from the Equator to 84 Degrees north and 80 degrees south latitudes.

Who is the Engineer Surveyor?

Engineer Surveyor is the broad term used to describe the key role of surveyor on civil engineering jobs. He first examine a Project Design Process and identify any design or practicality issues.
